In Emma, the Woodhouse family is the younger branch of an ancient family that has been settled for several generations at Hartfield, near the village of Highbury. Their fortune from Hartfield, which is but a notch in the Donwell lands, is inconsiderable, but their fortune from other sources is large.[1]

The family presently consists of Henry, his two daughters Isabella and Emma, their husbands John Knightley and George Knightley (respectively), and the John Knightleys' five children: Henry, John, Bella, George, and Emma. Isabella and John Knightley are the heirs to Hartfield.[2]

One of Isabella and Emma's grandmothers was named Catherine,[3] but it is unknown whether she was Henry's mother and therefore a Woodhouse or the mother of his late wife.
