Uppercross is a moderate-sized village three miles from Kellynch and two miles from Winthrop. Until the marriage of Charles Musgrove and Mary Elliot, the village only had two houses superior to those of yeomen and laborers: Uppercross Hall, the seat of Mr. Musgrove and his large family, and the parsonage, where Dr. Shirley and his wife have lived for forty years. Upon their marriage, one of the farmhouses was improved and elevated to become Uppercross Cottage.
