A year before the events of Persuasion, in London, Sir Basil and Sir Walter had to give precedence to the naval officers Lord St. Ives and Admiral Baldwin. Sir Basil told Sir Walter that Admiral Baldwin, whom he'd believed to be about sixty, was only forty years old.
