Mr. Purvis was a friend of Robert Watson, who six years ago courted Robert's sister Elizabeth during his frequent visits to Stanton; however, Elizabeth's sister Penelope set him against Elizabeth in the hope of marrying him herself. Instead, Purvis stopped visiting the Watsons and soon afterwards married someone else. Elizabeth says she will never love a man as she loved Purvis, but that would not prevent her from marrying another man.
