Hurst

Mr. Hurst is a gentleman who appears in Pride and Prejudice. He is the husband of Louisa Hurst, and the brother-in-law of Charles and Caroline Bingley.

He merely looks the gentleman,[1] but though he is described as having "more fashion than fortune,"[2] he has a house on Grosvenor Street and his wife brought twenty thousand pounds into their marriage, suggesting he cannot be entirely penniless.

He lives only to "eat, drink, and play at cards," and he judges Elizabeth Bennet for preferring a plain dish to a ragout and reading rather than playing cards.[3] He is irritated when his companions are distracted from the game, and on another occasion, when no one wants to play with him, he has nothing else to do except go to sleep.[4]
