Mary Price is the deceased daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Price. She was about five years old when her sister Fanny (then ten) went to Mansfield Park, and a very pretty little girl, remarkably amiable, whom Fanny had preferred to their other sister Susan. When she heard Mary died, she was quite afflicted, and upon her return to Portsmouth, she is struck by their sister Betsey's resemblance to Mary.
Mary's godmother Mrs. Admiral Maxwell gave her a knife six weeks before she died, which two hours before her death she gave to Susan. Over the next two years, however, Betsey has repeatedly stolen the knife from Susan (with their mother's compliance), upsetting her. This state of affairs continues until Fanny purchases Betsey her own knife and, preferring it, she gives up Mary's.
