Lieutenant Fairfax was an officer in the ---- Infantry Regiment who served under Colonel Campbell, at one point nursing him through a camp-fever and saving his life. He died in action abroad, leaving behind a widow and a young daughter. His widow Jane Bates soon died of consumption, and their daughter, Jane, was left in the care of her maternal grandmother Mrs. Bates and aunt Hetty Bates; however, Colonel Campbell remembered Fairfax's service to him, and in gratitude, he invited Jane to come live with him and his wife Mrs. Campbell and be educated alongside their daughter, the future Mrs. Dixon.
