In Emma, the Knightleys are a family whose seat is Donwell Abbey, near the village of Highbury. The family is closely connected to the Woodhouse family through marriage. The family might be "land rich, cash poor" since George Knightley, the head of the family, has "little spare money" and does not even keep carriage horses.[1]

Before George Knightley married and (presumably) had children of his own, his heir was his brother John Knightley, a barrister in London, who married Isabella Woodhouse and had five children: Henry, John, Bella, George, and Emma.
