Jane Watson is the wife of Robert Watson, an attorney in Croydon, with whom she has a daughter named Augusta. Her father was an attorney in Croydon who gave her a dowry of six thousand pounds when she married his former clerk, and she is very proud of her wealth and smart house, where she gives genteel parties and wears fine clothes.
Her sister-in-law Margaret comes to stay with them in Croydon to make Tom Musgrave miss her, but when that doesn't work, they bring her back to Stanton where Robert and Margaret are reunited with their sister Emma after fourteen years.
