Enscombe is an estate in Yorkshire owned by the Churchill family. The current owner is Mr. Churchill, who (along with his wife Mrs. Churchill) adopted his nephew Frank Churchill as his heir following the death of his mother. Though he was married to Miss Churchill of Enscombe, Mr. Weston has never seen the house.
The house is large and fine, but retired. Very little goes on in the neighborhood because there are few families of rank, which leads the Churchills to make visits among a range of great families, none of whom live near, and because of Mrs. Churchill's poor health and irritability, even when they do make plans to go visit, sometimes they must cancel at the last minute.
The Braithwaites were invited to visit the house in January, as they are every two or three years, and Mr. Weston hopes they will be put off before they can visit, freeing Frank to come see him at Randalls. Since Frank does not visit until February, it can be assumed the Braithwaites were not put off this year. Once he does visit Randalls, he writes his aunt and uncle in Enscombe to put off leaving, and his uncle replies that his aunt is in bad health and he must return home.
Mrs. Churchill comes to believe Enscombe is too cold for her constitution, and she travels with her husband and nephew to Richmond, where she dies. Her death allows Frank to admit to his uncle that he is engaged to Jane Fairfax, and after three months of mourning, Frank and Jane marry and settle at Enscombe with his uncle.
