Emma. is an adaption of Austen's 1816 novel of the same name by Focus Features, and released in February of 2020. It is directed by Autumn de Wilde, and stars Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role as Emma Woodhouse.

Synopsis[]

Jane Austen's beloved comedy about finding your equal and earning your happy ending, is reimagined in this. Handsome, clever, and rich, Emma Woodhouse is a restless queen bee without rivals in her sleepy little town. In this glittering satire of social class and the pain of growing up, Emma must adventure through misguided matches and romantic missteps to find the love that has been there all along.

Cast[]

Trivia[]

  • Throughout the movie, Emma is seen wearing a necklace with an amber-coloured, jeweled cross. This piece of jewelry resembles and is likely based on a necklace owned by Jane Austen in life.

Differences from the Novel[]

  • The riddle scene from the novel featuring Mr. Elton, Emma, and Harriet is not included.
  • Mr. Knightley's proposal is interrupted by Emma developing a nosebleed, an addition by the director.
  • Emma herself ventures to the Martin farm in order to deliver an apology to Robert Martin and amend his and Harriet's relationship.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The infamous nosebleed was an addition by the director based on her own experiences with experiencing nosebleeds, particularly during romantic moments in her life[1]
    • Though the nosebleed was scripted, while filming the proposal scene, Anya Taylor-Joy's started to bleed for real.
  • The film is costume designer Alexandra Byrne's second Austen-adaptation, the first being the 1995 adaptation of Persuasion.
