Charles Musgrove is heir to Charles Musgrove, Esq. of Uppercross in Somerset. In their neighborhood his father is second in importance and wealth only to Sir Walter Elliot.[1] Charles has at least seven younger siblings: Richard (deceased), Henrietta, Louisa, and Harry as well as at least one unnamed brother and two unnamed sisters at school.[2]
When Anne Elliot was twenty-two years old, he proposed to her, but she rejected him. His parents believe she was convinced to reject him by Lady Russell because Charles wasn't bookish enough, but really Lady Russell wanted her to marry Charles.[3] Around a year later Charles proposed to her sister Mary, and they married on December 16th, 1810.[4]
By the summer of 1814 they have two sons: Charles and Walter, who is two years old.[5] Mary claims that Charles spoils their children and that is why she cannot control them, but Charles believes he could manage them better if it weren't for Mary's interference.[1]
